Golden Gate National Recreation Area, or
Golden Gate Park as it’s known to some, is a huge preserve right
outside the bounds of San Francisco. It is well preserved and well respected
by city planners and conservationists all over the world for its progress
in the fight to maintain land and control urban environments.
Since San Francisco lies right on the mighty Pacific, it is not hard
to imagine a time when this coastal region boasted some of the most
interesting natural attractions in the world. Of course, with the expansion
of cities, much of the habitat was laid to waste. Deciding their town
could do without significant urban expansion beyond the golden gate
bridge, much of the land on the other side is protected and flourishes
minutes from the city.
Alcatraz Island, various river valleys, beaches, open fields, and historic
sites are all dotted around the grounds at Golden Gate Park. The hundreds
of attractions throughout the 74,000-acre plot see millions of visitors
annually, and for good reason. Luckily, the park is never really overcrowded
or cramped.
Golden Gate Park has a variety of options for anyone seeking outdoor
recreation in California. From a calm escape to challenging hikes and
climbs, you have plenty of options.
