Los Angeles is located in a Mediterranean climate or subtropical
zone. Typically Los Angeles has mild, slightly wet winters and
warm to hot summers with little humidity. Breezes from the Pacific
Ocean keep the L.A. beach communities cooler in summer and warmer
in winter than those further inland. Summer temperatures can sometimes
vary by as much as 25 degrees F. The coastal communities of Los
Angeles can also experience the 'marine layer', a dense cloud
cover caused by the proximity of the ocean, that helps keep the
temperatures cooler throughout the year.
Temperatures on average summer days are around 85 to 90 degrees
F, with overnight lows of 66 degrees F. Winter daytime high temperatures
average around 70 degrees F, with overnight lows of 48 degrees
F. Los Angeles averages 15 inches of precipitation per year, but
it rarely snows in the city basin. Weather permitting, it is possible
to ski and surf on the same day in the Los Angeles area.
