San Jose California is the capital of Silicone Valley.
This affluent city has grown to be the 3rd largest city in California
in recent decades and has acquired world-class shopping, dining and
cultural amenities. It may not be in the big leagues of California hot
spots just yet, but it’s getting there.
There are a number of interesting museums to visit in San Jose. The
San Jose Museum of Art has a small but high-quality collection of Bay
Area and West Coast modern art. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum displays
the largest collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts west of the Mississippi.
Kids will have a ball amid the technical Technicolor kaleidoscope and
interactive adventure that is the Technical Museum of Innovation.
San Jose’s parks have a variety of activities to offer. The Raging
Waters water park in the largest in Northern California. Happy Hollow
Park & Zoo is a lovely place to spend an afternoon gawking at the
lemurs (which gawk right back). Outdoor adventure is on the agenda at
Alum Rock Park, where hiking, biking and picnicking are just the beginning.
San Jose’s professional athletics experience is somewhat unique.
Most of the teams’ names start with S, for example, and the leagues
are a tad obscure. The Sharks NHL hockey team is no surprise, but the
Spiders NWBL women’s basketball team may not be a household name
for many visitors. The AFL Saber Cats are the city’s arena football
league. Go to see what Arena Football is all about. Stay to see the
Saber Kittens cheerleaders.
The Plumed Serpent statue in La Plaza de
Cesar Chavez caused a stir in San Jose. Christians protested its pagan
symbolism; others criticized it for inaccurately representing the ancient
Maya deity Quetzalcoatl. Many just thought it was too expensive.
