Sacramento is the capital of California. This former gold-rush town isn’t on most tourists’ agendas, but maybe it should be. In addition to the historical and cultural attractions this city can provide, there are many of outdoors adventures to enjoy as well.

The American River is a favorite center of activity. The 1842 paddleboat The Spirit of Sacramento’s one-hour tours are fully narrated. Self-guided tours are an option on the lower American’s Class II waters via American River Rafting Rentals, Incorporated. The Truckee and other tributary waters give visitors the chance to spend a few days whitewater rafting.

Sacramento’s parks are fun for the whole family and then some. Camp Sacramento is close enough to Lake Tahoe to make a day trip. Del Paso Regional Park contains 100’s of acres for hiking or horseback riding. William Land Park is chock full of attractions the kids will love, like the Sacramento Zoo, Funderland and a 9-hole golf course.

The Jedediah Smith Memorial Bicycle Trail is a great way to enjoy the scenery. There are 23 miles of it, not just for biking, but also for hiking, horseback riding and birding. The Crocker Art Museum features both modern art and a fantastic collection of 19th century American landscapes, all housed in Edwin Crocker’s gorgeous Victorian Home. The Yolo Wildlife Area is a good place for visitors to hunt, either with guns or cameras.
