This palm tree lined beach is the perfect
place to come and sit with a book. You can lounge on the grass, the
sand or on one of several park benches that line the boardwalk. La Jolla
Shores is tucked into the La Jolla residential community, a short distance
from the quaint and ritzy downtown, which boasts expensive clothing
stores, touristy hotels, shops and art galleries.
This family beach is great for picture taking and picnicking. The one
mile of shoreline
with the beautiful backdrop of impressive architecture and the active
boardwalk which
follows the length of beach all make for a picturesque and tranquil
day out. |
The paved
boardwalk is great for walking, jogging, bicycling or rollerblading.
La Jolla Shores is
convienent for laying out, going for a stroll or tossing the Frisbee
along the sandy shore
or in one of the several grassy areas surrounding the beach.
There are an abundance of picnic tables and BBQs available on the grassy
areas at both ends of the beach and at Kellogg Park, located behind
the main lifeguard station. There are fire rings on the beach for evening
bonfires.
La Jolla Shores is accomodating to all ages. Children will enjoy the
colorful and modern
playground at the south end of the beach. While adults can indulge in
the small scale but fun and mellow surf, scuba diving, snorkeling and
kayaking. Keep an eye out for surf
flags which indicate where to surf and where to swim. Lifeguards are
available year
round to help out.
La Jolla Shores has the only beachfront boat launch within the city
limits. Small vessels can be launched directly into the surf at the
foot of Avenida de la Playa, south of the lifeguard station.
La Jolla Shores has a huge parking lot that can easily accommodate over
three hundred
cars. The lot offers free parking and is only a couple feet from the
beach. If by chance
you can not find parking in the lot, you can park on residential streets
close by. This beach is really popular with the tourists during the
summer, especially during mid-day. If you are looking for a quiet day
out during this period, it’s best to avoid this beach or better
yet, make this a spring, winter or fall destination. It is just as beautiful,
but without the hectic summer crowds.
