VAN DAMME STATE PARK: Is a lovely park located off of Highway
1, approximately 3 miles south of the coastal town of Mendocino.
The park is rich in historical resources and extensive history
of the redwood timber industry. One of the best ways to get a
true perspective of this unique and unusual coastline is by Kayak.
The campground is separated by Highway 1 and the Fern Canyon trail
head, which is east and the beach is west.
CLIMATE: As with any coastal town on the Northern California
coast, climates vary and layered clothing is recommended.
ACTIVITIES: This Park is known for the scenic 10 mile hiking
trails along the luxuriant Fern Canyon of “Little River,”
and is loaded with mature, cone-bearing cypress and pine trees.
Skunk cabbage grows in large quantity. Jogging and bicycling is
also popular along the paved road on the trail. California kayaking
and Abalone diving are popular activities at the beach and Kayak
tours are available.
