Location: Mendocino County, California
BEACH: Jug Handle consists of a strip of land approximately one
mile wide that encloses a set of five terraces similar to a staircase.
The Ecological Staircase trail goes through the geological up
drift from the Pacific coast to the Pygmy Forest two and a half
miles inland. This chain of marine terraces represents something
unique and unfound elsewhere in California. Jug Handle State Reserve
is a special place. Not many places on earth demonstrate a more
complete record of ecological succession. A must see for those
moved by ecology. Each of the five terraces represents one stage
in a progression of series of environments, making Jug Handle
one of the few places to view this aspect of the coastal spectrum
of ecological succession and landscape evolution.
CLIMATE: As with any of the beaches in Northern California, the
weather can vary often and layered clothing is highly recommended.
