MUIR BEACH: Located north of San Francisco on Highway 101, Muir
Beach is located in Marin County. Marin “town” is
quaint and just six miles off Highway 101. This is one of two
beaches that surround the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
This beautiful area is full of California wildlife: Monarch butterflies
in the pine trees, salmon in Redwood Creek, frogs in the pasture,
fox, birds, deer and coyote’s, to name a few. There are
trails and both horses and dogs are allowed on portions of the
beach. Fishing, boogie boarding, surfing and swimming are also
activities allowed at this beach.
MUIR BEACH CLIMATE: As with any of the beaches and coastal towns
in Northern California, the weather can be changeable; layered
clothing is recommended.
LOCAL MUIR BEACH FLAVOR: Muir Beach is located just over the
last coastal ridge west of Mill Valley. This is a very small area,
comprised of about 150 homes, and is more known for its trails
that climb along the bluffs of the Golden Gate National Recreation
Area. The main in and probably most successful business in town
is the adorable “Pelican Inn.” This lodge has a great
restaurant and live music, to include imported beer always on
tap.
The Muir Woods National Monument, California is approximately
2 miles inland. This is a 550 acre gift given to the Federal Government
in 1907 by “The Kent’s,” a very high up family
in Marin County. While there is a store and snack bar, the biggest
lure is striking coast redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens, several
of the old trees are up to 20 stories tall. Muir Woods is open
8 a.m. to dusk. Admission is $2 for adults. The number for more
