Topanga beach is in the city of Malibu at the base of Malibu
Hills. The beach is located
between Santa Monica Beach and Malibu State Beach, off the Pacific
Coast Highway
just past Topanga Canyon Road. This is one of the popular surf
spots in the region.
The spacious sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing or checking
out the multitude of
surfers out on the water.
The beach is somewhat secluded with not too many amenities within
walking distance.
There are several restaurants along the coast, if you want to
pick something up before
spending the day at Topanga beach. There is also a market not
too far from the beach,
also off the PCH. There are about five picnic tables under shady
trees down by the
beach, which offer a great place to have lunch.
The surfers say that this beach has a fun reef break protected
from the wind, which
provides lengthy and smooth rides down the coast. This is definitely
a local spot,
but looks somewhat welcoming and not too crowded. The waves are
mellow and
could be fun for beginners as well as advanced surfers. The waves
shape out smoothly
into a long right that can hollow out on larger days. These would
be great waves for
long boarding.
People come to Topanga beach to sunbathe and to surf. It is quiet
and out of the
way beach, for those days when you do not want to fight to heavy
beach crowds
and just want to chill out and relax.
There is a paid parking lot off the PCH and you walk down a flight
of stairs to reach
the beach. The cost ranges from $2-$5, depending on the days of
the week and the
seasons. There is also free parking available on the PCH.
