Point Dume County Beach is located north of Santa Monica Beach
and south of
Zuma County Beach. The Point Dume Malibu area is off the Pacific
Coast Highway and Westward Beach Road. This is a breathtaking
area to explore around Malibu. There are hiking trails all the
way to the top of the bluff and a great beach and tide pool area
at the base of the sandstone cliff. There is an amazing view from
the cliff, which encompasses the Santa Monica bay, coast and mountains
and on a clear day you can even see Catalina
Island.
There are several volleyball courts along the sand towards the
north end of the beach
and ample space to sunbathe. The beach is scenic and off the beaten
track, so the noise
from the busy PCH is inaudible, providing a tranquil and visually
stimulating coastal
experience.
There is a surf scene at Point Dume County Beach, but this is
not a beginning surf spot
due to big waves. This can be an adventurous surf location for
advanced to intermediate
surf levels. Point Dume County Beach is also a great beach for
snorkeling and scuba.
The beach connects to Zuma beach to the north, offering a long
stretch of sand for
strolling along an uninterrupted coastline.
Point Dume is a fantastic beach for California Grey Whale watching.
The whales can be seen from the beach during their migration season,
which is December through March.
The best views are from the top of the bluff.
There is a large paid parking lot close to the beach with over
300 spaces available. You can also park for free at the top of
the cliff and on the roadside before you enter the parking lot.
The best time to visit is definitely during the whale migration.
The Southern California coast offers beautiful sunny days almost
year round, providing the best conditions for hanging out at the
beach throughout most of the year. It is best to take advantage
of the opportunity to see nature up close during the whale migrating
season. It is definitely a sight to see.
