Malibu Lagoon State Beach is located off the Pacific Coast Highway,
about 15
miles north of Santa Monica Beach. The entrance to the main attraction,
Surfrider
beach (the local surf spot) is located south of the Adamson House,
a famous Malibu house that was built in the early 1900s. Surfrider
beach is Malibu’s hottest surf spot. On an average day there
are over 20 surfers in the water. It is also common to see some
of Malibu’s celebrities showing off their surf skills at
this beach.
Malibu Lagoon State beach attracts a huge crowd and can get very
crowded during hot days when the tide is high. But the beach has
a long break and the locals, as well as the out-of-towners seem
to respect each other. There is plenty of room and waves to share.
There is also a wide, white sand beach to sunbathe or picnic on
the beach. There are also volleyball courts and hiking trails
available close by.
There is a nearby lagoon which is great for nature exploring and
hiking. The lagoon is a
resting and feeding ground for more than 200 species of birds.
There are picnic tables
around the nature area by the lagoon, creating a ideal way to
kick back and check out
some of the Southern California saltwater marsh eco-system.
The 700-foot long pier, located south of Surfrider beach, in Kellers
Shelter Cove is
great for saltwater fishing. There is a fantastic view of the
beautiful Pacific and the ritzy
Malibu Colony to the south, where the some of the rich and famous
are said to reside.
Malibu Lagoon State Beach parking lot is located on the west
side of the Malibu Creek Bridge. There is a paid parking lot located
directly in front of the Adamson House. It is $10 a day to park
in the lot. There is also lots of free parking off the PCH, but
you have to arrive early to get a good spot, especially during
the summer months.
