La Piedra State Beach is a short distance from Zuma Beach, located
of the Pacific Coast
Highway (PCH). La Piedra in Spanish means the rock and this beach’s
rocky coastline
holds up to its name. The pebbled beach is accompanied by a small
stretch of white sand,
offering a great place to lie out when the tide is out.
The picturesque bluffs, lined with blooming wildflowers during
the spring and summer
months offer fantastic views. During the week the beach is very
secluded and quiet but
crowds pick up on the weekends with people in search of a quiet
getaway to sunbathe.
There are thick kelp beds and a nice reef for California diving
or snorkeling. The beach offers warm waters during the summer
months for swimming or cooling off after a day of sunning on the
hot sand. The winds can pick up at times and water conditions
often get choppy. Check the conditions before planning a day out
at this beach.
La Piedra beach can be accessed by small dirt trail, located at
the entrance of the beach
on the north side. The trail to the beach is uneven and rocky,
so wear comfortable shoes
to get to the beach. There are several trailheads at the end of
the parking lot that lead to
the edge of the bluff, but do not have beach access.
There is a small, 20 space dirt parking lot which costs $3.00
a day.
There is a meter
box for an all day pass.
