El Pescador State Beach is known as one of the “pocket”
beaches of LA County.
It is located off the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and neighbors
La Piedra State Beach
to the south. El Pescador, means “the fisherman” in
Spanish and this beach is actually a great fisherman’s hideaway.
There is a nice patch of sand to cast from and limited water sports
to tangle your lines. You can also try surf fishing from this
beach. The beach can be accessed by a short dirt trail on the
west end of the parking lot.
El Pescador State Beach is protected from the wind on several
sides. It is half moon
shaped and provides a private and cozy place to spread out the
beach blanket and
sunbathe on white sand. A large sand stone cliff aligned with
beautiful wildflowers towers over the wide stretch of sandy beach
below.
Most of the summer crowds choose Zuma Beach to the south over
this beach, leaving
El Pescador as a peaceful beach to choose in LA for a day out.
There are several picnic
tables at the top of the cliff to have lunch. Make sure and stop
in Malibu, near Zuma
Beach for food or beach gear.
There are waves at El Pescador for surfing or body boarding, usually
on large south or west swells. It is not considered the best in
LA County, but the chance to surf the warm waters of the Pacific,
without the intense crowds might be worth it. Diving is also another
possible water activity at El Pescador. There are outer kelp beds
with an abundance of sea life.
This beach has limited parking. There are about 20 spaces in a
dirt parking lot above
the beach. The cost is $3.00 a day. There is a meter box for an
all day pass.
