California beaches can be divided into two major categories
climate-wise: northern and southern. Those unfamiliar with California
may be surprised at how different these two can be from each other.
The weather in Long Beach California is considerably different than
the weather on the beaches of Big Sur no matter the time of year.
Southern California weather on the coast is remarkably consistent and
famously mild. Warm and sunny describes the bulk of the year, and even
the winter and the brief “rainy season” hardly deserve the
name. The water remains a bit chilly all year, however, so most surfers
and water-sports lovers stick to the summer months.
Northern California weather on the coast is temperate and, while hardly
as harsh as inland winters, can be unpleasant for beach lovers during
the colder months. Certainly the water is dangerously cold and choppy,
even in the summers, though beaches are more pleasant and offer good
camping (still, it never hurts to bring a jacket).
