California is a big state, and finding dog beaches for Fido to romp
on can be daunting. To that end here are some suggested California dog
beaches for you and your furry friend to enjoy.
Huntington Beach’s Dog Beach in California
is located 37 miles south of Los Angeles on Pacific Coast Highway between
21st St. and Seapoint St. in the city of Huntington Beach. An entire
mile of golden beach along the Pacific Ocean has been made a paradise
for dogs. They can play in the water and run around without a leash
to their hearts content. Dog Beach is maintained by a non-profit organization
that depends on donations to stay open and clean.
The Dog Beach Zone in
Long Beach California permits off-leash beach access for dogs
in a 3-acre area, every day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Dog Zone is at
4800 E. Ocean Blvd. between Roycroft and Argonne avenues at the water
in Belmont Shore, 90803. The Nov. 2005 issue of Dog Fancy acknowledged
Long Beach, California as one of their Top-10 Dog Friendly Cities in
part due to its dog friendly beaches.
Point Reyes National Seashore
allows leashed dogs (on a 6 foot or less leash) on 4 beaches: Limantour
Beach, Kehoe Beach, North Beach and South Beach. Dogs are not permitted
on the hiking trails, but are allowed on some hiking trails that are
adjacent to Point Reyes. Visitors can stop by the Visitor Center for
a map of dog-friendly hiking trails. Point Reyes National Seashores
is located about an hour north of San Francisco and is just one collection
of the dog beaches Marin county offers.
Dog Beach in Ocean Beach,
California, located near San Diego, and with 38 acres of sand
is one of the largest dog beaches in the United States. Every week the
beach is visited by thousands of dogs, which are allowed to run off
their leashes here anytime during the day. Naturally owners are required
to pick up after their dogs, and face heavy fines if they do not fulfill
this obligation. Pooches that get too dirty while having fun at the
beach can be taken to the self-serve dog wash just 2 blocks away.
