Arkansas is known as the Nature State in the world. So it is little left to wonder what amount of natural offerings the state exude for its discerning onlookers. Wide variety of endangered species of fish, plants and animals are conserved in various designated natural areas in Arkansas. Around 70 natural areas are included in Arkansas System of Natural Areas that provides the creatures with their vital habitats. Arkansas River Valley, Ouachita Mountains, Ozark Mountains, Coastal Plain and Crowley’s Ridge are the homes to number of enthralling natural areas sheltering some of the endangered species. Arkansas Oak Natural Area nurtures the plants and also permits special types of hunting. Baker Prairie Natural Area is the largest identified reminiscent of Ozark Mountain prairie.

 

  • Cossatot River State Park Natural Area
Major population of the Browne’s waterleaf, a versatile plant species, survives in Cossastot River State Park Natural Area. The Cossatat River is the lifeline of this flourishing area in the Ouachita Mountains. Bumping rapids and joyous waterfalls are produced at various junctions of the river course, as it flows down the ridges. Two species of fish commonly found in the Little River system thrives abundantly in the pace of Cossatat river. Some parts of this area are widely open to public visits. Environment education sessions are also conducted quite often. You can get closer to the nature while relying on the convenience the area offers. These include a smooth pedestrian river walkway, canoeing area, camp sites and hiking trail.

  • Big Creek Natural Area
Big Creek is the vast tributary of Little Red River and five miles of its course add to the beauty of Big Creek Natural Area. The lush green environs complement to the gushing waters of Big Creek flowing through this natural haven. Located on the north east of Arkansas Valley, Big Creek Natural Area boasts some of the great fishing spots multiplying the leisure moments. Varied species of fish and large variety of water creatures thrive in Big Greek. A 200 feet tall Bluffs Tower majestically stands to apply charm on this tributary. The topography of this area is naturally suitable for survival of various plants and animals, some of them belonging to endangered species. You can even walk down the trail to explore some peculiar features of this area.
