Arkansas national forests encompass the total land area of 2.9 million acres in the state. Spread out amidst mountainous terrain and picturesque views of lakes, gushing rivers and lavishly spread greenwoods, the three national forests in the state – the Ozark, St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests -have much in store for the visitors. Camping, hiking, fishing around and lots of adventure activities are offered in abundant in these forests. The Ozark – St. Francis National Forests is a vast blend of two separate forests each offering a different topography and diversified geographical specifications. Ouachita National Forest is best known for its designated wilderness areas.

 

  • Ozark-St. Francis National Forest
The Ozark and St. Francis National Forests are the two separate forests bearing a great deal of differences in its vegetation and climatic conditions. The Ozark National Forest features around 500 species of trees in 1.2 million acres in northern Arkansas. This forest covers most of the Ozark mountain terrain with Mount Magazine – the highest peak in the state, the longest Ozark Highland Trails and the most mesmerizing Blanchard Springs Caverns – the mysterious underground caves. St. Francis National Forest is spread in 22,600 acres of lush green bed in eastern Arkansas. It is best known for fishing in its two large lakes – Bear Creek Reservoir and Storm Creek Lake. These two forests combine to offer 23 developed campgrounds, 9 swimming areas, more than 300 miles of hiking and 370 miles of water stretch for fishing.

  • Ouachita National Forest
The Ouachita National Forest comprising 1.8 million acres is the largest and oldest National Forest in southern America. It is spread in 12 counties of Arkansas and two counties of Oklahoma. The six wilderness areas encompassing most of the Ouachita Mountains are filled with number of recreation activities like birds watching, hiking, camping, hunting and enjoying scenic drives. It has 60 developed recreation areas on 700 miles of trails and a wonderful glance of the historic activities. Ouachita National Recreation Trail is the most adventurous 223 miles trail which maximizes the hiking experience and also offers an opportunity for mountain biking in some parts of the trail.
