Wupatki is a widespread collection of ancient dwellings, carved into the Arizona landscape over 900 years ago. Self-guided trails can take you on a trip through time, giving access to almost 800 different communities and structures.

This is an intriguing, hallowed area, rich with history and mystery alike. The people spread out along the path were well adapted to their surrounding until the unexpected eruption of Sunset Crater, which sent then inhabitants sprawling all over the desert. After relocating, many of their homes were salvaged, providing an intriguing glimpse into Arizona’s past. Of course, the land is now well protected.

Geologists and historians have done their best to chronicle these early American civilizations, which are now documented in a thorough visitors center onsite. Whether you choose to attempt a long lonely journey through the desert or simply want an example and an overview, Wupatki can give you an amazing portal to the past.
