Sunset Crater National Monument

Dramatic volcanic activity dated back a thousand years is responsible for Sunset Crater’s shape and the now famous nationally recognized land surrounding. Sunset Crater is now a worthy stop in Arizona’s desert lands.

The makeshift volcano is the region’s youngest, but life has made its way back since the blast. Wildlife and vegetation have crept up the new mountainsides. The color of the crater’s dazzling rim is now flecked with bright oranges and reds, a little highlight left behind from the skyward molten rock. Mother Nature’s resilience is on display all around when you step to the crater’s edge.

This aptly named Arizona wonder is well worth a look and a hike. If it’s a bit out of the way, go anyway.
