Built into towering Arizona limestone cliffs, Montezuma
Castle and Montezuma Well are two of the best-preserved glimpses into
ancient life in southeast America. Near Arizona’s Camp Verde they
are easily accessible and worthy of a significant hike and an entire
day of exploration.
Montezuma Castle once served as the multifarious living quarters of
the intriguing Aztecs, a culture that continually fascinates historians
and archaeologists. There are over twenty rooms within the makeshift
building, an impressive five story complex. When you consider the primitive
means of construction Aztecs were afforded, Montezuma Castle becomes
a triumph over the harsh Arizona natural world.
Montezuma Well is a more recent addition, channeling local wells as
early Aztecs may have in ancient times. If you are visiting Arizona,
Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well are two attractions that you absolutely
cannot miss.
