Unlike some Arizona national sites, Organ Pipe Monument
is not based around one or two historic sites. Instead, the main attraction
is the desert life itself, flourishing in the exhausting climate in
every direction.
The Sonoran Desert can be a daunting place to visit. The heat is consistently
nudging one hundred and the gently rolling sands go on for miles. The
idea that the plants and animals of Organ Pipe National Monument can
survive and spread as they do, covering some sectors and gently dotting
others, is startling. For visitors of the site, there are plenty of
opportunities for camping in the cool night air, braving trails in the
thick Arizona heat, and of course, tons of towering cacti.
