Coronado Cave

Coronado Cave is a semi-wild cave. Visiting is easy, though it requires several careful crawls. Old clothes and two lamps per visitor are a good idea, as are helmets, gloves and kneepads. A permit from the Visitor Center of the Park is required.

Coronado Cave is reached via a 1.2 km hike from the Visitor Center. The cave entrance is fairly small, and it is necessary to climb over some huge rocks. The cave has only a single main passage, and the floor is sandy and level. The passage widens to form chambers featuring several formations. The greatest is the Sentinel of the Cave, a huge symmetric stalagmite standing in the center of the last chamber.

While Coronado National Memorial is primarily a historic site, the park is also famous for the oak woodland and their variety of plants and animals. Yucca, Cholla, Beargrass, Bobcats and Mountain Lions are common there.
