Called Alaska’s Emerald Isle, Kodiak Island is famous throughout the world for its gargantuan brown bears, the largest in the world, which may often stand 9 feet tall on their hind legs and tip the scales at more than half a ton. Millions flock down to this place to observe these magnificent animals gorge on the plentiful island salmon. But there is more to Kodiak than Kodiak Bears. The island’s nearly 3,600 square miles of untamed wilderness and wild, rugged coastline are chockablock with outdoor adventures like wildlife viewing, backpacking, hiking, camping & range of water sports.

Pillar Creek is 10 minutes of paved road from Kodiak City, and a short drive in a 4x4 or walk from the Monashka Bay road. The creek runs from Pillar Mountain. Small salmon runs are found here in addition to cliffs and trails. Pillar creek is a great spot for family camping. There are trails to explore and the water temperature in the river allows for swimming. Those fond of hiking & long walks can enjoy some excellent birdwatching in the area. At times bears may be spotted close by while they are feasting on salmons.
