Alaska’s Tongas National Forest is popular for a variety of winter activities including (among other things) 1st-rate cross-country skiing. There are 2 trails in particular that provide excellent Alaska skiing.
The Twin Ridge Ski Trail provides intermediate and advanced cross-country skiing during the winter, with a one-way length of just less than 5 miles. Blue diamond trail markers mark the trail, though these may be covered by blowing snow in winter. Good skiing conditions usually last from November through early April. The trail offers spectacular views of both Frederick Sound and the mainland. Alaska wildlife is abundant here.
The Upper Twin Ski Trail makes a loop that provides intermediate cross-country skiing opportunities every winter. This trail is 3.2 miles long. Blue diamonds also mark this trail, and also may be difficult to find in winter if snow is blowing. Though challenging, the entire length of the trail is suitable for intermediate level skiers who are in good physical condition. This trail offers beautiful views of both the Wrangell Narrows and the mainland.
