There are few outdoor adventures that are more exhilarating than Alaska skiing, and in a state this big, there’s bound to be lots of opportunities. For some fantastic cross-country skiing trails, one needs to look no further than Alaska’s Parks System, and the other great spots like the Tongas National Forest Skiing Area and Chugach State Park. Downhill lovers also have plenty of slopes to choose from, such as Moose Mountain Ski Area, where the vert is long and the waits are short.

Located in the scenic mountains that flank the city of Anchorage, Chugach State Park offers a wide variety of winter activities, including skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing, mountaineering, snowmobiling, dog sledding and back country hiking. In fact, the cross country skiing in Chugach State Park is top-notch. The park is blessed with many wild and wooly trails that are sure to give Nordic skiing enthusiasts a great workout in some of the most gorgeous surroundings in the United States. In addition, numerous cabin rentals are available for overnight stays in the park.
Chugach State Park
Amongst all other things, Tongas National Forest Skiing Area is popular for a variety of winter activities including 1st-rate cross-country skiing. There are 2 trails in particular that provide excellent Alaska skiing. The Twin Ridge Ski Trail provides intermediate and advanced cross-country skiing during the winter, with a one-way length of just less than 5 miles. The trail offers spectacular views of both Frederick Sound and the mainland. The Upper Twin Ski Trail makes a loop that provides intermediate cross-country skiing opportunities every winter. This trail is 3.2 miles long. This trail offers beautiful views of both the Wrangell Narrows and the mainland. Good skiing conditions usually last from November through early April.
