Chugach State Park is located in the scenic mountains that flank the city of Anchorage, Alaska. Though much of Chugach State Park’s 490,000 acres is made up of remote backcountry areas accessible only by foot, entrance to the park can be reached via the Seward Highway, or from the Hillside area, the Glenn Highway and by vehicle from various other points.
Chugach State Park offers a wide variety of winter activities, including snowshoeing, ice climbing, mountaineering, snowmobiling, dog sledding and back country hiking. Alaska skiing fanatics take note: the cross country skiing in Chugach State Park is top-notch. Chugach is blessed with many wild and wooly trails that are sure to give Nordic skiing enthusiasts a great workout in some of the most gorgeous surroundings in the United States.
Chugach State Park is home to several species of Alaska wildlife, including lynx, black and brown bear, moose, sheep, bald eagles, and wolves. There are also a number of public use cabins may be rented for overnight stays in the park.
