Alaska’s Tongass National Forest is chockablock
with trail systems. They’re scattered throughout the forest and
cover some 600 miles all told. The Ketchikan Hiking Trails are just
one of many places there to go Alaska backpacking, but that doesn’t
detract from their splendor. Here are just a few of Ketchikan’s
great places to hike.
· Shelokum Lake Trail: This
steep and rocky path is among the most scenic and challenging of Ketchikan’s
trails (2.2 miles).
· Naha River Trail: The main attraction to this trail is the varied and abundant wildlife
that may be observed (5.4 miles).
· Winstanley Lake Trail: This is a moderately difficult trail that crosses Winstanley Creek twice
(2.3 miles).
· Humpback Creek Trail: A very difficult hike to the top of Humpback Hill is worth it just for
the peaceful ponds and waterfalls (3 miles).
· Hugh Smith Trail: An easy, breezy t and short trail that lets hikers gets a look at Alaska
Dept. of Fish & Game biologists studying salmon populations (.5
miles)
