It is important to remember that the Alaskan hiking trails are meant for the brave-hearted hikers since most of these trails are unpaved & unmarked. In fact, there are several trails that are accessible only by boat or helicopter. One such popular trail near Anchorage city is the Resurrection Pass in the Kenai Mountains with a 38-mile hiking route. Fairbanks also has some excellent terrain for hiking. The trails at White Mountain National Recreation Area offer an exciting challenge for those interested in athletic Alaska hiking trip.
Alaska Hiking Bakewell Lake Trail Aaron Creek Trail
This 1.3mile long natural trail traverses around Ward Lake located 8 miles north of Ketchikan by road. The trail is gravel surfaced and easy to hike. Signs interpreting old-growth forests are located along the trail. This is a heavily used trail connecting all of the facilities located around Ward Lake including campgrounds, picnic areas and fishing sites. Deer are a common sight along the trail route with occasional sightings of black bear. The trail is also a popular spot for bird watching. In addition to these natural recreations, the Ward Lake Recreation Area also offers a large number of developed recreation facilities.
Ward Lake Nature Trail
Besides being one of the well-used & most scenic trails in Juneau, The Perseverance Trail is also amongst Alaska’s three most historically significant trails. In fact, this trail constructed in 1889 is considered by many to be the first road in Alaska. The trailhead of the 2.3 mile Perseverance Trail is located at about 8 miles drive from Ketchikan. As you walk up through this broad trail flanked by mountains, you can notice many relics from the gold mining era including water wheels, tools, old mill sites, etc. These age-old relics are intermixed with natural attractions like waterfalls, wildflowers, snow slide gulches & bird watching opportunities. Today, this particular trail provides easy hiking access to fishing in Perseverance Lake, camping & berry picking.
