Alaska State Museum

This museum in Juneau features permanent exhibits on Alaska's Native peoples, Natural History along with Russian and America exhibits. Temporary exhibits are also featured throughout the year. It has Native, mining, fishing, and original displays. A circular ramp pays tribute to the state's wildlife, including a life-size eagle's nest that rests atop a two-story tree. The gallery showcases the culture of Northwest Coast Indians-the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples as clan settlements along with their traditional Native carvings and paintings.

The first floor features the ethnographic galleries about Aleut, Eskimo, Athabaskan and Northwest Coast peoples. You have exhibits that include beach grass baskets and collection of masks, arrows and snowshoes. The focus of the Eskimo gallery is an umiak, a 34 foot boat along with hunting and fishing implements made of ivory, bone, wood and metal. The Russian America exhibit has important artifacts and American period shows development of Alaska's natural resources -- fisheries, timber, minerals and oil.
