Juneau, Alaska’s capital, sits nestled amongst
some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Great snowcapped
peaks, cold clear waters and eerie blue glaciers surround it on every
side. Juneau also sits in the middle of the world’s northernmost
rain forest. It seems that outdoor adventures in Juneau are as plentiful
as snowflakes.
Juneau Alaska is justifiably famous for its water-sporting activities.
Kayaking enthusiasts will have found their paradise on Juneau’s
day and multi-day trips. Rafters will find good Class II & III rapids
on the Mendenhall River and relaxing 10-mile floats on the famous Tatshenshini
River. The fishing in the Juneau area is world-class, with plenty of
Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden and all 5 kinds of Salmon to catch, as
well as the occasional 100 lb. Halibut. Chartered fishing tours are
myriad in Juneau, but floatplane trips into the Bush for a little fly-fishing
make for unforgettable trips for those who can afford it. Boat tours
are also a great way to observe the wildlife, like Steller Sea-lions
and migrating Humpback Whales (April to November), as is the excellent
diving in Juneau’s wonderfully clear water. Juneau’s beaches
come in both the sandy and rocky varieties.
Juneau Alaska is one of the nation’s prime hiking and mountain
biking destinations. There are over 100 miles of groomed hiking trails
for visitors to enjoy. The Mt. Roberts Trail goes through the Alpine
country above the city. The Wet Glacier Trail runs roughly parallel
to the Mendenhall Glacier and offers incredible scenery.
Juneau’s Glaciers are a sight to behold. Mendenhall Glacier is
6 miles long, 1.5 miles wide and its face is more than 100 feet high.
The twin giants that are the Sawyer Glaciers in Tracy Arm southeast
of Juneau are also must-sees for any visitor. Of the many ways to observe
these natural wonders, “flight-seeing” is perhaps the most
exhilarating. There are a number of chartered plane and helicopter tours
to choose from, and the Mt. Roberts Tram gives great views of the entire
area as it rises from sea-level 2,000 feet to the mid-point of Mt. Roberts.
