El Capitan Cave

Alaska Home | Alaska Sitemap
El Capitan Cave is located above the El Capitan Forest Service Camp in Alaska. It is the largest known cave in the state. The entrance faces south across the shallow El Capitan Passage, providing a nice view of Kosciusko Island. A wooden stairway runs up the long hillside to the cave and tours are provided for visitors by Tongass National Forest.

The El Capitan Cave Access Trail is 1300 feet long, and climbs about 300 feet from the parking lot to the cave entrance. It is considered to be a difficult hiking opportunity, and features a combination of tread types that include gravel, boardwalk, wooden stairways and natural tread.

The Thorne Bay District will also be conducting guided walks into the cave throughout the summer. Potential visitors should contact the Thorne Bay District for more information on accessing this cave.
