There are some places that every canoeist must visit
at least once in their lifetime, and Prince William Sound Alaska is
certainly one of them. The canoeists can explore the cold blue waters,
fjords, islands, channels and bays, and the famous Prince William Sound
glaciers. Among the most magnificent sights of any Alaska canoe trip
are the enormous sheets of glacial ice breaking off and crashing into
the ocean.
Sturdy, stable canoes are best for a Prince William Sound tour, both
to handle floating ice and to keep canoeist in their boats. Because
of the danger of cold water emersion and the consistent rainfall dry-suits
are recommended, even in the summer.
The little port town of Whittier Alaska is the base of operations for
exploring Prince William Sound. It can be reached from Anchorage along
Hwy 1 only through the Anton Memorial Tunnel. The Anton Memorial Tunnel
is a one-lane toll route that is shared by both cars and trains. For
