Canoeing Kenai Canoe Trails

Alaska Home | Alaska Sitemap
One of only two designated wilderness-canoeing systems in the United States, Kenai Alaska Canoe Trails presents near-pristine waters for canoeists to enjoy in some of Alaska’s most peaceful country. The two systems that make up Kenai Canoe Trails are the Swan Lake and Swanson River Canoe Routes. Swan Lake is the smaller and more popular of the two, but both routes contain over 30 lakes and 50 miles of canoeing route to explore.

The terrain and climate of the Kenai Canoe Trails is flat sub-artic wetland. The lakes tend to freeze around October and thaw by May. Summers are mild and rainy.

Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant in Kenai Canoe Trails. Loons, ducks and other waterfowl are frequent visitors. Moose, muskrats, wolves and the occasional bear can be seen as well. For those canoeists who moonlight as anglers there is some lovely trout and Kenai salmon fishing to be done in the Moose and Swanson Rivers.
