  • Museums in Alaska

Right from Ketchikan to Unalaska to Anchorage, the nation’s largest state Alaska has an array of museums spread across various cities. While some are built to celebrate the native culture & rich tradition of Alaska, there are others that are dedicated to airplanes, trains & native art. Interestingly, there are also museums located along the Inside Passage on cruise line routes. An important thing to note is that most of these museums & cultural centers are either free or charge just a token entrance fee.

A must see attraction for avid aviation buffs is the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum located at Anchorage. With the mission to preserve, display and honor Alaska's aviation heritage in the form of historic aircraft, artifacts, and memorabilia, the museum aims to foster public interest in aviation and its history. The museum features several aircrafts, a restoration hangar, flight simulators, two theatres and a Hall of Fame. This rather small museum is really specialized in the sense it covers the history of Alaska aviation with a focus on bush pilots. The inside galleries cover commercial aviation, bush pilots and a bit of military history. The storage hanger is the highlight having plentiful planes with a few that have been restored.

The Aurora Ice Museum was built as a way to boost tourism at Chena Hot Springs Resort located 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks. The museum features a gallery, an ice bar, overhead chandeliers all made of individually carved ice crystals which change color every six seconds mimicking the northern lights. Countless sculptures including a gigantic chess set, life sized jousting knights, an ice fireplace and 4 galleries with varying themes. Devoted to all things ice, this museum puts you in a winter mood no matter what the summer temperatures are like. There's an indoor igloo, coca cola bear, pulpit, giant jousting sculpture and lots more! Best of all is the beautiful lit-up "fireplace" and Ice-Mass Tree!
