Anchorage Weather

Though many would assume that the city of Anchorage, Alaska would be could and dreary, it is actually far south of the Arctic Circle, and the protection provided by the Chugach Mountains, as well as the warm currents from the Pacific Ocean, make Anchorage weather surprisingly mild year-round. In fact, the Anchorage climate is comparable to that of San Francisco, California’s spring.

Temperatures can reach into the 70's (Faranheit) in the summer, though typical highs average around 65 degrees. Winters are cold, but not harsh, and snowy, with high temperatures around the mid-20’s. Anchorage’s winter climate is most like the ski resorts of the Rocky Mountains or the Alps. This low humidity is another factor Alaska’s largest city has in it’s favor.

Anchorage is also home to the famous Midnight Sun; there are 24 hours of functional daylight on the Summer Solstice. By contrast, on the Winter Solstice Anchorage sees only 5.5 hours of daylight.
