The South Loop of Conecuh Trail

The Conecuh Trail is located south of Andalusia, Alabama, and is actually a network of hiking trails that wind throughout the Conecuh National Forest, which links it to Florida. Conecuh forest is worth a visit whether one plans to hike or not, rife as it is with moss-garlanded Cyprus trees, rare natural ponds and many endangered creatures. With its diverse ecology, Conecuh National Forest is a fine place indeed for some top quality Alabama hiking.

The South Loop of the Conecuh Trail begins at Open Pond and makes roughly 7-mile circuit through the wooded hills, past wildflower dotted meadows and copses of pine, until it reaches the big and fast 5 Runs Creek. The South Loop, like most Alabama hiking trails, is quite easy, but it does get a little more strenuous from 5 Runs Creek to Alligator Hole (where you’re more likely to see a turtle than and Alligator).
