National Park hiking opportunities are surprisingly numerous at Russell Cave National Monument in northeast Alabama. Located near Russell Cave is a .6-mile steep nature trail that winds past many plants that were once used by the cave's inhabitants, as well as a 1.2-mile steep hiking trail and the Russell Cave Trail. It can take 1 to 2 more hours for hiking and nature trail, so visitors who want to visit the cave and visitors center museum should plan accordingly.
The scenic Russell Cave Trail provides a pleasant hike through forest and wildflowers that surround the National Monument. This asphalt footpath climbs up the side of Mount Montague before meandering back downhill to the foot of the mountain, where the trail becomes a wooden boardwalk that leads into Russell Cave.
These Alabama hiking trails are steep and arduous, with hidden drop-offs, sinkholes and other natural hazards. Visitors may not run on these trails.
