Alabama’s DeSoto Falls were named after the Spanish explorer who, supposedly “discovered” it during his explorations in the New World. The 104-foot DeSoto Falls provides its visitors with awesome beauty.
DeSoto Falls is actually a series of 3 waterfalls. Each is very different and each is very beautiful in its own way.
The falls are created by the West Fork of the Little River, which plummets into a little canyon that it has carved out over the millennia. Fed by the DeSoto Lake impoundment (the dam is a short distance away), the Little River next rumbles down the rocks creating the first, small waterfall. The big waterfall is further downstream.
Though visible from the DeSoto Scenic Highway, also known as AL-176, the waterfall is actually accessed from neighboring highway, County Road 89.
