Cathedral Caverns

Alabama’s own Cathedral Caverns was developed by Jay Gurley who worked 10 years to make it a show cave. When he showed the cave to his wife the 1st time said it resembled her a cathedral, so Gurley changed the name from the obvious “The Bat Cave” to Cathedral Caverns. The Big Room in particular is an impressive location within Cathedral Caverns; spools of electrical cable and lanterns light up the Big Room like an underground baseball field.

Cathedral Caverns has Alabama’s largest cave entrance, an impressive 24 meters high by 37 meters wide. Cathedral Caverns also claims to have the world's largest stalagmite, called Goliath. Alabama’s Cathedral Caverns is home to an enormous “frozen waterfall” as well.
