Alabama’s Mobile-Tensaw Delta is the 2nd largest
river delta in the United States. It is made up of a 10 mile-wide marsh
and cypress-tupelo swamps in a bottomland hardwood ecosystem. The Delta
is home to more than 50 threatened and endangered plant and animal species
known to inhabit Alabama wetlands and waterways.
The Bartram Canoe Trail System is the perfect way for recreational boaters
(canoes and kayakers in particular) to explore the rivers, streams,
lakes sloughs and bayous of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. The eerie yet beautiful
scenery draws Alabama outdoor adventurers time and time again to boat
and fish its gator infested waters. Truly Bartram Canoe Trail System’s
phantasmagoric primordial swampscape must be experienced to be believed.
Day use and overnight trails in the Delta are maintained by the Alabama
Department of Conservation State Lands Division. In addition to this
2 land-based and 4 floating platform campsites are also provided.
